In my early days of self-improvement, I believed that it should only take a few weeks to build a healthy habit.
That’s right. In the same amount of time it took for my kids to completely reverse all the hours I spent cleaning and organizing their messy room, I could have learned a new habit.
Boy, was I wrong!
In reality, according to author James Clear, it takes anywhere from 18-254 days for people to form a new habit.
Well. That is humbling.
So why bother if it’s going to take that long?
Is it worth all the hard work and possible disappointment? The constant pep talks inside your head, struggling to do the same thing day after day, and dealing with failed attempts at sticking to a habit?
For almost 254 days?!
It’s easy to feel overwhelmed before you even begin to dream.
But let me share something else from James Clear:
“Your life goals are NOT your habits”.
Your desire to earn more income within a year, your health goals, or your promise to yourself to stop holding onto stuff – these are all things you may want.
And while you might use the SMART goal system to reach these goals, it’s NOT the only way to live your life and become the person you want to be.
Join me and my friend, Austin Christensen, as we break down the fantastic advice in the motivational book, “Atomic Habits” by – you guessed it! – James Clear.
It’s chockfull of advice that will help you relax your shoulders and relieve that burden you carry around with you every day – the fear of spiraling. We know what it’s like to lose your self-awareness, stop caring, and just do anything that makes you feel better in the moment.
But like Clear reminds us, anything that’s truly good for us isn’t immediately beneficial.
Instead, try focusing on building life-long habits that are obvious, attractive, easy, and satisfying.
It does take time, but isn’t it better to know that you’re moving forward every time you do that habit or routine? Even if you only do it for 5 minutes a day.
Instead, those 254 days of sticking to that habit are going to feel like powerful little moments of self-care.
And that’s a whole lot of room-cleaning that you will NOT be doing for your kids!
